5 Tips For Surviving the Cold and Flu Season {Health}

Tips to Survive Cold & Flu SeasonOctober is usually the beginning of flu season in Canada and families everywhere start battling with colds and flus.

Here are a few simple tips I put together to help you survive the cold & flu season. Prevention is the way to go!

1. Eat a Healthy Diet:  Eating a balanced and healthy diet will keep your immune system working and ready to fight off infections. Eat dark leafy greens and lots of Vitamin C filled fruits like kiwi, apple, orange and strawberries.

Remember the old saying, “an apple a day keeps the Dr. away”?  Well, it is true, healthy eating really makes a difference.

2. Wash Your Hands: Wash, wash and wash those hands. No need for antibacterial soap. Good old regular soap and lots of water, that’s all you need. Washing your hands and your little one’s hands frequently throughout the day is the best way to limit exposure to germs and potential colds and flus.

3. Get Enough Sleep: Lack of sleep is known for decreasing immune function and leaving you susceptible to catching colds and flus.  If your child is starting to sleep through the night then be sure to turn the lights off at a reasonable time to get at least 8 hours of sleep. Your body needs the down time to get ready to fight infections.  Same with your child, a stablished bed time routine will help them get the sleep they need.

4. Add Exercise to Your Daily Routine: Regular exercise is great for boosting your immune system and helping you stay healthy.  Schedule at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day. It can be as simple as putting your child in a stroller or carrier and going for a walk together.

Echinacea

5. Boost your Immune System with Echinacea:  Echinacea is a traditional herbal medicine that can help fight off colds, flus and infections. It can also help relieve sore throat and other cold symptoms. You can help your body battle the cold and flu with a natural supplement like Swiss Natural Echinacea,

Hope you and your family manage to stay healthy this season, remember it is all about eating well, frequent hand washing,  getting enough rest, staying fit and boosting your immune system!

    October 15-’Eat a Healthy Diet’-I know this is really important. I have noticed that people who seem to live on ‘fast food’ seem to be ill a lot more than what I observe to be healthy eaters. It makes sense that what you put in your body nourishes it well or not just like what you put in your gas tank-to use a poor simile. Thanks for reminding us.,-el03ro

    I really want to try this product. My immune system is very bad due to my disease. A minor cold can put me in the hospital.

    October -Washing your hands is probably one of the best ways to avoid cold and flu germs. I wash mine many times a day -which means I keep a bottle of moisturizer handy as well. Sometimes little boys do not want their hands washed but Mom must persist.

    October 17-Getting enough sleep should be a ‘no-brainer.’- I know many women, myself included, who would stay up late to finish some work or project or even to read the latest thriller. We may be a bit tired and ‘out of sorts’ the next day but I really did not realize that sleep deprivation would be dangerous to our health. We see prisoners in other lands being tortured by sleep deprivation but we do not apply this to ourselves. We know now, thsnks to people like you, that we harm our bodies by lessening its natural defenses to sickness and colds. Thank you for this timely reminder.-

    October 18-’Adding exercise to your daily routine.’–I really try to get what I would call ‘formal’ exercise, i.e., walking, stretching, or weight lifting exercises. I know these help me to feel and function better and I am happy to hear they will stave off colds and the flu as well. Another reason to keep moving!-el03ro

    October 19–Boost your Immune System with Echinacea. I have heard about Echinacea before and its properties for healing. I have never tried it but I will certainly think about it now. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

    I do a mix of Echinacea, Vit C and Zinc whenever there’s a cold going around and I feel a little tickle in my throat… it’s always worked and prevented the cold from setting in!
