sponges

By Contributor Pamela Chan

At the best of times, cleaning a kitchen every day is a challenge. The best approach to cleaning is a combination of establishing a routine, perseverance, being consistent, keeping the end goal in mind and using the right tools.

  • Do I have the right type of cleaning supplies?
  • Should I use a sponge or a cloth?
  • Should I try this new product?
  • Will the choices I’ve made for cleaning supplies be the best options?

I was happy to have the opportunity to try out new Scotch Brite products because there is always room for improvement as I tackle cleaning tasks every day. The kitchen, in particular, is a room where I experience highs and lows related to my assessment about how effective my efforts have been.

I received four products to try out including:

  • Stay Clear Scrub Sponges (bottom left in photo);
  • Stay Clear Cleaning Wand Refill, accompanied by a wand that had the classic cleaning sponge attachment (top right)
  • Inside Appliance 2-in-1 Non Scratch Scrub Sponge (top left); and,
  • Stainless Steel Sink Sponge (bottom right).

Stay Clear Scrub Sponges

The first product that I tried immediately was this textured, purple cleaning sponge. It is designed to safely clean all cookware including stainless steel cookware and copper and non-stick surfaces. It is not recommended for use on stainless steel appliances. On stainless steel and non-stick cookware, I found that it removed stuck on food quickly, without requiring a lot of “elbow grease”. As advertised, the textured side of the sponge does not trap food as you use it.

The sponge has a densely woven surface on the side that has the raised white dots. On the other side it looks more like a classic sponge. I normally try to rinse out my sponges frequently in extremely hot water and put them, periodically, in the clothes washing machine; however, I like the suggestion to put the sponges in the dishwasher. (You can also put them in boiling water.)

Stay Clear Cleaning Wand

This cleaning wand has the same design as the larger Stay Clean sponge but is formed in a rounded triangular shape that slides onto the wand. The cleaning wand can be filled with dishwasher soap that squeezes through the sponge as it is used. I tend to like to use some kind of cleaning product on a wand when I clean dishes, so this product appealed to me. I also liked that I didn’t have to keep reaching for the dishwasher liquid while I was cleaning.

Inside Appliance 2-in-1 Sponge

This sponge is designed to be used in microwaves. One side has a no scratch surface that scours stuck on food and spills. The other side absorbs the crumbs, residue and liquid. We have a microwave that has a special surface that makes cleaning easy. Many microwaves don’t have this type of surface and would be good candidates for this type of sponge.

sinks

Stainless Steel Sink: 2-in-1 Rejuvenating Scrub Sponge

Of the four products, I have to admit that it was the sink sponge that peaked my interest the most. The maroon side scours and erases scratches, rust and residue that collects on the sink surface. The grey side scours and polishes the sink surface for a freshly cleaned and shiny finish. You can see from the photos that the sink on the left continued to have a golden sheen – even after it was cleaned with a sponge. This golden sheen was eliminated in the sink on the right after this Scotch Brite sponge was used. The sponge is quite thick. You can really press down on it and feel that it isn’t going to break apart as you tackle a large sink.

While I’m pretty thorough about cleaning out food from my sink, I’m not as consistent about actually scrubbing the sink. Some months ago a visitor cleaned my sink with bleach. The results were attractive but I didn’t want to replicate this effort because I don’t want to be using bleach in my sink. From what I’ve read, bleach isn’t harmful to the environment. It degrades mostly into salt and water, with the remaining bleach being treated by waste water treatment plants. That said, I still wanted a more manual and less smelly approach to cleaning a sink. I really wanted this sponge to work well and I felt satisfied that it did.

Specially designed sponges do make a difference as you tackle cleaning tasks in your kitchen on a daily basis. I have adapted these sponges to other uses but it should be noted that Scotch Brite also sells sponges for granite, stainless steel appliance and stove top surfaces. I’ll be watching for those products in my local supermarket.
