Books for the kids and books for yourself. This month I am sharing some fantastic new book recommendations for your home library from DK Books Canada

I love getting new books for the boys, and lately, they have been loving everything related to science. DK Books has a great selection of encyclopedias and age-appropriate interactive books to get kids interested in STEAM and Science.

They also have great books for the adults, and I picked two interesting titles this month for us.

NEW DK Canada Books for the Kids and For Yourself!

The STEAM Team

The zany characters of the STEAM Team will guide kids ages 5-7 through this engaging, fact-packed book all about the key STEAM subjects: science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

This bright and cheery illustrated book for kids ages 5-7 breaks down STEAM subjects, like science and technology, into fun and easily understandable chunks. Join the STEAM Team to unravel the mysteries of the world: Find out how robots work, what a food chain is, where lightning comes from, how lungs allow you to breathe, and much more. The STEAM Team characters (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) guide the reader through the book and are always on hand with tips, fun facts, and simple explanations. With pages covering living things, the human body, space, physics, geography, math, engineering, and chemistry, this book is a perfect introduction for kids starting to learn about science at school or those who are just developing an interest in how the world works.

Our thoughts: This book has been perfect for our 5-year-old son. A great introduction to STEAM in a fun, interactive manner.

How To Be a Scientist

A bold and playful approach to science that makes the subject relevant to kids and encourages them to discover it in the real world with more than 40 fun questions, science games, and real-life scenarios.

Why does mold grow? Why is the sea salty? What makes day and night?

Kids can have all these questions-and more-answered in How to be a Scientist, as they learn how to think like a scientist and look at the world to figure out how science works. More than 40 simple activities have undetermined answers, encouraging curious young readers to find new ways to test ideas, and fun questions, games, and real-life scenarios make scientific concepts fun and relevant. The stories of the great scientists and their discoveries-and failures-are told in an entertaining way to provide even further inspiration for little budding scientists.

Our thoughts: Lots of answers to many scientific questions and real-life scenarios for children to learn from. Super informative and filled with fun games.

Look I am a Scientist

Perfect for kids ages 3-6, this activity book will get little ones discovering amazing everyday science as they play their way through 14 exciting experiments found inside.

Look I’m a Scientist is bursting with fun hands-on learning experiences that will get children playing, discovering amazing everyday science, and excited to try the experiments again and again. The 14 activities are easy to prepare, set up, and create, and visual step-by-step instructions and a charming design make it the perfect STEM activity book for parents and their little ones to share. From an iceberg animal rescue to stretchy slime and a science wizard potion, kids can pour it, mix it, feel it, and more, as each sensory-friendly activity becomes an ever-so-exciting science experiment.

Our thoughts: This is a book filled with experiments that are easy for kids to follow. Our youngest loves picking an experiment and getting hands-on experience while having fun. Step-by-step instructions make it simple and educational.

Unsolved Murders

This true crime book makes you the detective, investigating some of the most infamous unsolved cases of the 20th and 21st centuries. Crime scenes, crucial evidence, witnesses, and persons of interest are clearly and concisely presented, along with essential details and clues so that you can judge for yourself: who could have done it?

Unsolved Murders also profiles the psychology of the killer, discusses the background and life of the unfortunate victim (or victims), and explores how these horrific crimes impacted the victim’s family and friends. From domestic tragedies to serial killers with love for the macabre, this book will have you returning to the cases again and again. Can you unlock the secrets of these unsolved crimes where others have failed? (We can’t promise that the book will give you the solution!)

Our thoughts: I love real-life crime books, and this is a must have for any crime book lovers out there.  The book focuses on 20 unsolved murders with lots of clues and evidence. Hard to put down.

The Mythology Book

Eighty of the world’s greatest myths and characters, from the gods of Greek mythology to the Norse heroes, retold and explained with engaging text and bold graphics.

From early creation stories to classical hero narratives and the recurring theme of the afterlife, experience each myth and unravel the meanings behind the stories, getting to the heart of the importance of mythology to different cultures worldwide. More than just stories, myths are a testament to the amazing creativity of humans striving to explain and make sense of the world around them. Here you will discover Zeus, god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods, and Loki, the cunning trickster with a knack for causing havoc, aided by his ability to change shape and gender. Beyond the gods and goddesses of Ancient Greek, Roman, and Norse myths, this book delves into the stories of the Australian aborigines, the Cherokee, and the Aztecs, each brimming with amazing characters and insights into human existence.

Our thoughts: If you ever wanted to study and get in-depth information on mythology this is the book for you. I love the graphics and fun, engaging text, making it fun to learn.
