Spookley The Square Pumpkin DVD

By Contributor Stephanie Young

My kiddo and I enjoy watching a good movie together. He’s 7 and I have discovered I need to be pretty careful with what we watch. I learned this the hard way last Halloween when I thought the movie Coraline was a kid’s movie.

Turns out it has some very disturbing imagery and caused my son nightmares. Big mommy fail there!

So I was excited when I was given the opportunity to review Spookley: The Square Pumpkin. I could tell it was a nice, low-key movie, perfect for Halloween since we would not be watching any creepy movies.

When I told my son, Brady, the name of the movie, he giggled. He wanted to watch it right away.

The DVD case states:

“In a world where the only good pumpkins are round pumpkins, Spookley is teased because of his square shape. Shunned by the other pumpkins, Spookley is befriended by Edgar, Allen and Poe, three hilarious spiders, who convince him that, square or not, he has a right to be the Pick of the Patch. But Big Tom and Little Tom, the pumpkin bullies in the patch, continue to tease and taunt Spookley. Encouraged by kindly Jack Scarecrow and his bat sidekicks, Boris and Bella, Spookley tries his best, but he isn’t sure he has what it takes until a mighty storm threatens Holiday Hill Farm. When the storm blows the round pumpkins across the patch toward the raging river, Spookley realizes it is up to him and his square shape to save the day.”

I absolutely love that this movie promotes the idea that being different is okay. Brady seemed to get this as he said, “I like Spookley more than all the others. I say square is a very good shape,” then added, “It would be awesome to have a square pumpkin for Halloween.”

And he often cheered, “Go Spookley!” during the movie. He also told me he thought about Spookley during a class field trip to a pumpkin patch. Its message seemed to resonate with him.

Not only does the movie celebrate differences, it also shows how Spookley’s difference becomes a strength during a challenging time. It is fairly short at 45 minutes but there are 5 video picture books as well.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and according to the website, Spookley is the Official Spokes Pumpkin.

We have decided this movie will be a new Halloween tradition.
