I own an instax mini 9 and I absolutely love it. My husband got it for me for Christmas last year and it was my first introduction to instant cameras and the Fujifilm brand. I have really enjoyed being able to print my photos instantly and getting a bit more creative when shooting photos. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about the new Fujifilm instax Square SQ20 and the possibility to try it out.

The brand new instax Square SQ20 was just launched on October 20th and it is the new hybrid instant camera from Fujifilm, a new addition to their instax series. The SQ20 has a variety of amazing new features that make it super powerful and fun, allowing for image editing and processing not seen in their other instant cameras before.

At first glance, the SQ20 is super stylish and sleek. It looks like a more significant camera when comparing it to an older instax. There is a digital screen in the back and there are shutter buttons on both sides of the camera allowing you to shoot with your right or left hand. I picked the matte black and the camera is also available in beige.

My favourite feature is the “Motion Mode” that allows you to capture moving objects and the ability to pick and print the best moment. Great for action shots and capturing dynamic situations. Because you can see what you are going to print on the screen and you can take a 15-second video, you have more options to get the perfect photo, even when subjects are not staying still, like my two wild children and excited puppy. I tell you, it is hard to get a still photo of a playful pup.

I also love the editing and filters you can use to play with your images before printing them. In Motion Mode you can use the Sequence filter to achieve a sequence effect on images. Resulting in super dreamy and creative shots.

Below I am sharing a list of some other functions/features I love on the Square SQ20:

♥ Rechargeable Battery: One of my favourite features. Not having to worry about buying and replacing batteries is wonderful.

♥ Time Shift Collage: Allows you to take 4 images with a time lag by pushing a shutter button only once. On this mode, the frame is divided irregularly and you can shoot different images for each divided frame to make one complete photograph. So much fun to play with.

Zooming Function (4.0 x): This is the first instax camera to offer a zooming function.

♥ Self-Shot Mirror: Like other instax cameras before, the SQ20 features a self-shot mirror attached to the side of the lens. I love this one when taking selfies as you can actually check the shooting range.

Film Frame, Retro: Frames are designed from the image of motion picture film makes your picture look like as if it is a scene from a movie. With Retro you can shoot pictures with sandy noise as you see in old movies, giving the photo a retro look.

Shooting Modes: You can select a shooting mode from a variety of modes available, including Standard, Bulb, Double Exposure (see example below), Split, Collage, Time Shift Collage. I love being inspired to get creative and trying something different.

♥ Selecting and Printing: I love how you can select your favourite photos to print after shooting. I find I am wasting less film and only printing what I want to print and keep. I love being able to print something immediately as well. Many times I take photos with my phone and just completely forget about them. With the SQ20 I can print them, display them or put them in an album right away.

Partial Colour: I haven’t played with partial colour photography much in the past so I loved being able to get creative with this feature. You can select one colour only and convert the other colours to monochrome. (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple).

Re-Print: Do you love a photo so much you want another copy? Yes, you can actually re-print your favourites with the SQ20. Photos are saved in your history and you can go back to print them again. Great when you want to gift somebody a copy and still keep one as well.

Print from a Micro SD card: You can also use the SQ20 as a printer and print your photos from a Micro SD card. Just insert a Micro SD card in the camera and save your photos taken with other cameras to print.

I am really enjoying playing with the instax SQUARE SQ20. I love that as a hybrid, it really allows you to get creative with your shots and print any photos you love, without compromising and knowing exactly how the end print will look like. I also really like that I can transfer photos I already have into the camera via Micro SD card to print. This camera has an iconic look and feel and it is a wonderful new addition to the instax family.
