matcha

Green tea is good, but matcha is better. Here’s why: green tea is a great source of antioxidants but because matcha is a finely ground high quality green tea that is consumed in its entirety (not just soaked in water) it has far more antioxidants than its soaker cousins.  The only way matcha powder can get better is if it’s organic. So when I was offered a sample of Kiss Me Organics Matcha Powder, I jumped at the opportunity.

If you haven’t had matcha before, I’ll warn you right here that it has a distinctly bitter, nutty flavor.  It’s not bad; it’s just distinct and may not be for everyone straight out of the bag.  The good news is that matcha powder is super adaptable and can be mixed into a variety of drinks and dishes.  It’s most famously used in the preparation of green tea ice cream.  And I think we can all agree that stuff is extremely delicious.  So bottom line: when first starting out with matcha, mix small amounts into recipes until you get comfy with the flavor because even a teaspoon a day is nutritionally beneficial.

Need some good matcha recipes?  Kiss Me Organics has you covered.  Shortly after placing my order for this bag of matcha through Amazon, I received a shipping confirmation email from Kiss Me Organics which contained a link to a free recipe ebook of over 50 uses for matcha including mixed drinks, baked goods, smoothies and desserts.  Keep in mind that the color of matcha is potently green, so most of the recipes result in green-tinted treats, including the baked goods which would definitely be a hit around St. Patrick’s Day.

My youngest daughter slurped down the mint chip matcha milk shake I made from one of the recipes in the ebook.  The sweet mint flavor dulled the bite of the matcha which resulted in a very pleasant treat. I’m excited that there are easy ways to get my kids the nutritional value of high quality organic green tea in formats they will actually eat and drink.  Next up: green waffles!
