Toddlers can be challenging at the best of time, but unless you have one of those unicorn toddlers who self-trains, potty training can be a real head ache. We opted to do the 3-day potty training method with our eldest way back when and amazingly he took to it very quickly and we said good bye to diapers within a few days. What I didn’t count on was that at less than 2 ½ years old, he would give me VERY and I mean VERY little warning when he did have to go. That made leaving the house a very dangerous proposition.

One of my favourite stories was my taking him to the local day at the farm a few weeks after he was trained and out of diapers. I made sure to have him go pee right before we headed to the car to go back home but of course, once we got to the car (in the middle of a giant farmer’s field) he announced he needed to poop. There was no running back to the port-o-potties, and I was stricken with sheer panic at the thought of my toddler dropping a deuce right beside my car in the make shift parking lot. He, of course, couldn’t have cared less and dropped his pants and undies and proceeded to go. I saw it coming and without even thinking, batted it away so it wouldn’t land in his pants. Yep. Poop. On the hand. In a field. Good times.

Fast forward to today, and it is now time to travel the potty training road with my youngest, and I am less optimistic now than I was then as we have no choice but to leave the house multiple times a day with big brother. I was given the Kalencom 2-in-1 Portable Potty & trainer to try out, and I have to say it really does give me a lot more confidence in our ability to get out and about without the stress of wondering where the nearest washroom is. I like that it is both a travel potty with 100% biodegradable disposable liners as well as a potty seat that can be placed on top of a regular large toilet. It folds down very small and comes with a fairly durable looking plastic bag/cover for stashing it in your bag or purse while out on the run.  I was able to fit it very comfortably in the smallest bag I use when out and about which was a pleasant surprise! The seat can accommodate a child up to 50 lbs, and since that is more like your average 5-year-old, it should last until you don’t need it anymore.

I had my little one try it out, and she seemed very keen to sit on it. Probably even more so than her actual stand alone potty. It was sturdy underneath her once I got the legs clicked into place (takes some tries to make sure they are in) and I wasn’t worried it was going to collapse under her. I have tossed it in my car for now so that while we are on the road or running errands, I have a practical option for emergency stops. I will also use it on top of a regular toilet when we are out and about since I have yet to meet a toddler who can sit on an actual seat without almost falling in. I also tossed a tiny travel can of Lysol in the bag as well as some hand sanitizer, because, toddlers.

The Kalencom 2-in-1 Portable Potty & Trainer come in red and blue is available at Amazon, and Canada’s Baby Store. The seat retails for approximately $19.99 CDN which is very reasonable for a potty seat, and the additional liners come in packages of 10 for about $8.99 CDN. If you are prepping for potty training and want a travel potty that can take some stress out of the process, the Kalencom 2-in-1 is a fantastic option.
