I love having the opportunity to help create awareness and appreciation for our beautiful planet. Our planet is the one thing we all will pass to future generations and making small individual changes now can help in a big way. Below I am sharing five simple ways to go green at home and join the change.

Donate Your Unwanted Items

Did you end up with a box of unwanted items after the change of season? Avoid tossing them in the trash and instead of sending them to the landfill take them to a local thrift store or a charity that accepts donations. Do a quick Google search in your area and you can find some charities with donation pickup services. They will send a truck to your home to pick up your boxes, so convenient!

Properly Insulate your Home

Proper insulation provides your home with a barrier against environmental conditions, keeping your home at a comfortable temperature during the summer and the winter. Add insulation to your walls, windows, and doors to help save energy. You can try using thermal shades to help you block the sun during the summer and help retain heat in the winter as well.

Purchase Organic, Sustainably Raised Meats

Next time you go grocery shopping look for organic, sustainably raised meats. Sustainably raised products come from small organic farms, where the animals are allowed to graze outdoors on pesticide-free grass. Organic farms don’t use growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides or chemical fertilizer either. The farms are usually tended by local, responsible farmers who practice more humane methods of production. Purchasing sustainably raised meats will help support the smaller farms and because they produce smaller quantities the quality of the meat is usually higher.

Use Eco-Friendly Products

Switching to eco-friendly products reduces your exposure to chemicals that can be harmful to your health and help reduce your ecological footprint as well. Look for eco-friendly products, made with plant-derived ingredients and free from SLS, DEA, Petrolatum, Paraben, Silicone, Phthalates, and Phosphates.

Plant-derived ingredients are natural, renewable, replenishable, and sustainable, and therefore the eco-conscious choice to respect, preserve and make as little environmental impact as possible.

Cook with Safe Pots and Pans

Overheating non-stick, Teflon pans while cooking can cause their coating to break down, which can result in the release of surface particles and/or toxic gas, with the coating getting into your food.  Avoid non-stick pans and stick to cast iron, enamel coated cast iron and stainless steel safe pots and pans. Remember that the pans and pots used for cooking can make an impact on what you get in your food.

Taking care of the Earth and taking care of your body can be achieved by making some small changes with big effects. It is easy to get started!
