Cosmic UFO

I can’t remember when it happened, but at some point between the ages of 2 and 3, D started being “afraid” of the dark. Naturally we got a night light, since having him sleep was the main priority. Recent reports (add link to study) have suggested that children need to sleep in true darkness and night lights should not be used. Now as a parent, I know full well that I need to pick my battles and if my now 6-year-old demands a night light in order to fall asleep, I am certainly going to comply. I know we should just turn the night light off when we go to bed, but now that we have a newborn, that isn’t always practical (i.e I always forget).

The Cloud B UFO gives us a nice alternative to having to use a night light. This nifty toy- like UFO has a number of nice features, including both a projection of Aurora Borealis type lights onto the ceiling as well as “windows” that are multi-coloured and light up in three different sequences. D also liked the motion sensor function that resulted in UFO flying sounds when he shook the UFO. Keep in mind a simple tilting of the UFO will activate the sensor, but try telling that to a 6-year-old boy.

The UFO also features an adjustable volume and my favourite feature: a 23 minute timer with an auto shut off, which is just enough time for a kid to nod off. 3 AA batteries are required, but are included with the unit. The retail on this item is a little higher than other Cloud B light and sound toys/machines at an MSRP of $64.99 CDN, but I do think this would actually be played with as a toy so there is an added value there.

D really liked this item, but sadly it did not replace the night light completely. I am hoping that in another year or so we can ditch it, but in the meantime, he does enjoy using it and I suspect it will get used more as a fun night time toy than a bedtime light, and that’s okay by me.
