SOAKER

By Contributor Jen Shragge

It is not often that my five-year-old begs and pleads for a toy. He is usually quite good at understanding that new toys come during birthdays and holidays. One exception is a water gun, which he’s been requesting for two full years. I have had a no guns or weapons rule since he was born and have stuck to it pretty steadfastly. I have, however, come to see his joy and excitement when playing with his friend’s water guns and super soakers and thought maybe it was finally time.

Enter the Nerf Super Soaker Barrage. This is not a water gun. It is a high-capacity soaking machine. It can hold up to 84 oz of water in the tank and has three different discharge modes, which my son loved playing around with and changing repeatedly. The nozzle that changes the soaking mode is very easy to use and the mechanism that discharges the water is also very simple.

Now if I had to cave and finally let him get one of these soaking machines, you bet I was going to use it to my advantage: I made my son wash my car. Oh yes. I am THAT mom and he had a blast doing it. He thought it was amazing fun and I am looking forward to the next free car wash!

The only minor issue is when the water tank is full; the soaker is quite heavy and can be hard for little ones to hold. In fairness, the age for this toy clearly states 7 and up and I think kids in that range would have less of an issue, but even I found it quite heavy all things considered.

With an MSRP of $19.99 I think this toy is good value and would make a fun summer time outdoor activity. I have fond memories of using super soakers when I was a kid so I think it’s safe to say this toy has longevity.
