I recently had the chance to test drive the new 2017 Ioniq Hybrid for a week. The Ioniq Hybrid can run on a gas engine, an electric motor, or both. This was my first time driving a hybrid, and I really enjoyed it. We own a base model vehicle so driving a fully loaded car with all the extras was exciting and fun as well.

Driving The 2017 Ioniq Hybrid

Some of our favourite features

(Note: All features not available in base models)

  • Safety

Driving the Ioniq I was pleasantly surprised about how safe I felt while in the vehicle.  The Ioniq offers some fantastic safety features, including the Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, the standard rearview camera and seven airbags including a driver’s knee airbag. Yes! All of those little things allow you to feel relaxed and safe while you are enjoying the drive.

  • Eco-friendly

Hybrid cards like the Ioniq run on a combination of gas and electricity, emitting less pollution than gas-only vehicles. As a result, hybrid vehicles run cleaner and have less dependence on fossil fuels. With better gas mileage, they are a great eco-friendly option. We loved driving an eco-friendly vehicle.

  • Apple CarPlay™* & Android Auto™
The Ioniq supports  Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, allowing you to put your favourite phone apps on the vehicle’s touchscreen. I loved having that available to access maps, my music library, contacts and more, without having to look for my phone. All can be accessed safely via voice recognition.
  • Heated front seats
If you hate getting into your car when it’s cold outside, then you will love having a vehicle with heated front seats. Let me tell you, it’s nice to sit down and feel warm immediately while you are in the car, no matter how cold and rainy it is outside.
  • Interior And Cargo Space

The Ioniq offers a pretty spacious interior, featuring 26.5 cu. ft. of cargo space, which is the large hatch that gives you great access for loading and unloading. The 60/40 split-folding rear seatback is also great when transporting larger items. I had two car seats in the back and went grocery shopping with both kids without any space issues. I even had a large car seat box I picked up from the post office in the back.

  • Seat Memory System

This feature was so cool; the Ioniq has an Integrated Memory System that moves the driver seat based on each driver’s stored position, I loved how after the engine turned off the driver’s seat would move back, allowing an easy exit. Then as the vehicle’s engine is turned on the seat would readjust, ready for you to drive off. All done automatically!

  • Quiet Ride

Electric motors already make very little noise compared to gasoline engines, but the Ioniq takes it one step further by adding sound absorbing materials above the rear wheel wells and thicker glass for the front windows. The car also features a wind tunnel-tested design that uses air curtains to manage airflow and increase aerodynamics. That means less noise and distractions and a more enjoyable ride.

  • Gas savings

Driving a hybrid means your gas expenses will decrease significantly.  I was impressed with how little fuel the Ioniq consumed after driving all over the city for a full week. The Ioniq gives you range of over 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of gas.

I enjoyed driving the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid and I am looking forward to test driving some other Hyundai vehicles in the upcoming months. Stay tuned friends!
