The start of a new year is the perfect time to get organized and set up a monthly budget worksheet, especially if you don’t already track your expenses and your spending habits.

I have been using a monthly budget worksheet for the last six months, and doing so had made me realized I had no idea how much money I was actually spending before I started keeping track. You may feel very confident about your own expenses, I used to feel the same way,  but entering everything on a spreadsheet and looking back at the numbers each month really changes the way you spend your money.

Keeping track of your expenses and having a budget doesn’t have to feel like another boring chore added to your list. The exciting part comes when you see the changes you make each month, and you start saving money or having more money allocated to expenses considered more “fun”.

I have created an Excel document template with two basic spreadsheets, the first one, a list of expenses, and the second sheet, a list of your income. By comparing how much you are bringing in, versus how much you are spending each month, you can get a pretty good idea of what you can afford and where your money goes each month.

Next time you are thinking about a family vacation, home reno or any other larger expense, a simple look at your spreadsheet can help you determine if you can go ahead with the expenses needed. You can also see which areas can be cut back and what can have an effect on your overall financial situation.

To help you get started tracking your own finances, I have made a FREE downloaded Excel document that you can use to start recording your expenses/income. You can edit the actual expense list to personalize it depending on your own situation. The sheet has all the formulas needed so all you have to do is add the amounts and you will get the net balance added automatically.

You can keep your budget worksheet saved in your computer, ready to access and edit whenever you need to, or you can print it out and fill it out by hand. Whatever works for you. I recommend keeping it on your computer to take advantage of the formulas, that will save you time, and there is no calculator needed.
