Florastor Probiotics

By Contributor Allison Baltzersen

Here’s the thing about probiotics: while they are totally good for you, they are kind of inconvenient to take daily.

Florastor Probiotics

Case in point: the bottle of probiotics in my fridge. Can you find it? Yeah, I usually can’t either.  After an exhaustive search, I finally found it cowering behind the applesauce.

Florastor Probiotics

The solution: Florastor Probiotics are shelf-stable for up to three years without refrigeration.  Craziness, right?  I read the fine print.  The manufacturers use a method called lyophilization (kind of like freeze-drying) to keep the non-bacterial yeast cozy at room temperature.  It doesn’t require refrigeration like yogurt and many bacteria-based probiotics, as it contains 250 mg of Saccharomyces boulardii lyo, found naturally on the skin of lychees and mangosteens (tropical fruits).  That said, these probiotics are not vegan as they do contain milk lactose. According to the packaging, because the product is non-bacterial, it does not interact with any antibiotic medications, exacerbate any candida yeast infections or lactose intolerance like other probiotics on the market.

Florastor Probiotics come in two styles: capsules for adults and tutti-frutti flavored powder packets for kids (age 2 months and up).

While it’s unclear what exactly the “tutti-frutti” flavor is (artificial? real?), it is rather pleasant to taste.  I mixed a pouch in plain coconut yogurt and my toddler inhaled the bowl, licking her fingers and asking for more.

These Florastor Probiotics, especially the individual Kids pouches, are extremely handy for families who travel frequently or tend to lose their traditional probiotics in the back of their fridge like mine does.
