I love my home smelling fresh and cozy, especially as the weather turns crisp and the leaves start to fall. But as much as I love a good seasonal scent, I also want to avoid products that are full of fake fragrances and chemicals.

Our family has both asthma and allergies, so keeping the air clean and safe is really important for me. The good news is that there are lots of ways to get that warm fall aroma in your home without exposing yourself to unnecessary chemicals.

Here are my five favorite ways of getting my home smelling nice without the chemical exposure:

1. Simmer Spices on the Stove

One of the easiest ways to fill your home with fall scents is by simmering a pot of water with natural spices. Cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, or a few slices of fresh orange work perfectly. Just let it simmer on low heat, and your home will smell like autumn in no time. You can even reuse the mixture throughout the week. I love doing this to get that beautiful home scent in my home.

2. Fresh Citrus and Herbs

Citrus and herbs aren’t just for cooking, as they make your home smell amazing too. Simply slice up some lemons, oranges, or grapefruit and combine them with rosemary, thyme, or sage in a small bowl of water. Place them on the stove or near a sunny windowsill for a gentle natural aroma. I do this and leave a little decorative cup with this by my main window in our living room to enjoy a subtle, fresh, clean scent.

3. Bake Your Favorite Fall Treats

I love baking, and nothing beats the smell of pumpkin bread, apple crisp, or cinnamon rolls baking in the oven. The scent naturally fills your home and makes it feel cozy and inviting. You also get a delicious treat at the same time, and no chemicals are involved, just real ingredients. So I do this on repeat. And as the weather gets colder, nothing beats a freshly baked pastry coming hot out of the oven. Heaven!

4. Use Dried Flowers, Herbs, and Spices

You can create a simple potpourri easily at home by using dried flowers, herbs, and spices. Cinnamon sticks, dried orange peels, cloves, and rosemary all work beautifully. Just put them in a decorative bowl, a sachet, or a decorative jar. They smell amazing and double as fall decor. I got some at Home Sense and use them as well around my home.

5. Essential Oil Diffusers with Care

If you want a slightly stronger scent, a few drops of pure essential oils in a diffuser can do the trick. For fall, you can try blends like orange and clove, cinnamon and nutmeg, or rosemary and vanilla. Make sure you are using 100 percent pure essential oils without any synthetic fragrances, especially for sensitive noses in your household. We have a dog at home, so we don’t do this, but we used to before we got Jada. It is another lovely way to make sure your home has a lovely scent.

I love using these simple chemical-free methods to have my home smelling like fall without compromising anyone’s health.

Cozy, fresh, and safe, that’s how I like it!
