Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds that are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants.  High quality essential oils have many health applications and can be used towards a holistic approach to wellness.

There are three common ways to use essential oils. Aromatically, topically and internally.  I didn’t really know that you could use essential oils as dietary supplements and in recipes before and after receiving an introductory kit from doTERRA I learned that some oils can be taken internally, but there are also some that should never be ingested.

doTERRA offers essential oils that are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and safe to be ingested. They do not contain filters or artificial ingredients and they are free of contaminants such as pesticides or other chemical residues.

The introductory kit I received contained a sample of Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint oils, an instructional audio CD and booklet.  I tried the Lemon oil immediately after opening the box as I had a sore throat that was very painful. The Lemon oil can be used with honey to soothe coughs and sore throats.  I love using natural remedies when dealing with colds and coughs.

I have started using the Lavender oil before bed to help me relax. I have been applying a drop to the bottom of my feet or pillow before bed and I really like the soothing and calming feeling.

It is important to note that some people are o.k. using essential oils undiluted directly on their skin when using them topically, but if you haven’t used essential oils before it’s a good idea to start with a carrier oil first.

Here are some other uses of the three essential oils I received:

Lavender

-Apply to back, hands, or feet if you are restless or agitated

-Use it to calm reaction to a bee sting or a bug bite

-Lightly apply to soothe sunburned or scalded skin

Lemon

-Apply directly to cold sores for soothing relief

-Diffuse in a room to neutralize odors

-Add to olive oil for a non-toxic furniture polish

Peppermint

-Add to shampoo and conditioner for a stimulating hair and scalp massage

-Use with lemon in water for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse

-Apply with lavender to sore, tired muscles and joints.
