The holiday season is here, and with it comes an influx of gifts, decorations, and (let’s be honest) that one family member who shows up unannounced every year.
Before your home becomes a festive version of chaos, it’s time to tackle the clutter and make space for all the seasonal magic. Don’t worry—it doesn’t have to feel like a chore. With these simple (and fun!) tips, you’ll be holiday-ready in no time.
1. Start with the “Clutter Zones”
This one is easy. Every home has them: the mysterious pile of mail by the door, the overflowing basket of toys in the playroom, or the chair in your bedroom that’s more laundry storage than furniture. Yup, we all have them! Tackle these first!
You can turn it into a game for the whole family. Set a timer for 15 minutes and see who can clear the most clutter. The winner gets first dibs on the holiday chocolates or extra video game time for the teens!
2. Use the “One In, One Out” Rule
We try to follow this rule in our home to ensure we don’t get overrun with extra clutter. If new gifts are coming in, then something has to go out. Have each family member choose items they’ve outgrown, no longer use, or just don’t love anymore. Donate gently used toys, clothes, or household items to spread holiday cheer to others.
If your kids are younger, make it a “Santa Donation Drive.” Explain that donating their toys helps Santa bring joy to other children. They’ll love that!
3. Create a “Holiday-Only” Storage Bin
If you’re not careful, holiday decorations can take over every corner of your house. Decorating is so much fun; I get it; stopping yourself from buying the cutest new decor you see at the store when shopping is hard, I know! So use clear storage bins to corral all your holiday decor, and label them by season.
When putting up your decorations, donate anything that no longer fits your style anymore.
4. Declutter Your Kitchen for Holiday Cooking
With all the festive baking and family dinners ahead, your kitchen deserves some love. Toss out expired pantry items, reorganize your spices, and clear counter space for holiday treats.
Keep a “holiday baking bin” with sprinkles, cookie cutters, and other essentials in one place.
5. Make Room for Guests
Whether you’re hosting overnight guests or just extra people for dinner, ensure your space feels welcoming—Declutter guest rooms or common areas by removing non-essential items.Try adding cozy touches like extra blankets, a small basket of travel-size toiletries, or a holiday-scented candle to make guests feel extra special.
6. Set Up a “Drop Zone” for Holiday Stuff
With all the shopping, wrapping, and general chaos of the season, designate a space where all things “holiday” can live. This might be a corner in your entryway or a bin in your closet. I have an area for all the holiday stuff in a closet in the basement, and that works for us. This keeps your living spaces clutter-free while giving you one go-to spot for all things festive.
7. Keep It Festive
Decluttering doesn’t have to feel dull. Put on your favorite holiday playlist (hello Mariah), sip on some hot cocoa (or mulled wine), and turn it into a celebration.
You can hang up a “Holiday Countdown Chart” where everyone can cross off decluttering tasks together. Treat yourselves when it’s all done—a movie night, anyone? “Home Alone” time!
Taking a little time to declutter before December hits full swing means less stress, more space, and a home that feels ready to embrace all the joy of the season. Plus, when guests arrive, you’ll actually be able to find the matching napkins instead of tearing through drawers like a crazy person.
So grab those trash bags, rally the kids, and make your home merry, bright, and clutter-free.
Cheers to a more organized holiday season!
