Hiking with Kids – Our Latest Favourite Trail in North Van

We love hiking as a family, and we have been hiking with our boys since they were both very young.

As a result, the kids really enjoy hiking with us, and we can go on nice long family walks with the dog where we all get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

There are many hiking trails on the North Shore we love, and we have some favourites, including the Rice Lake trail, a very easy one to do with kids. But we recently discovered another trail that we all enjoy, and it allows dogs.

The Twin Bridges Trail is a scenic trail that takes you through the Seymour River Canyon passing a suspension bridge and scenic views along the way.

You can access the trail starting at the Rice Lake parking lot at the end of Lillooet Road. Head east from the parking lot, towards the edge and look for the start of a trail. The trail follows alongside a road and then crosses into a path that heads into the forest.

Continue the walk into the forest and follow the path that descents into the canyon towards the Seymour River. When you arrive at the junction, go right and walk along the path that follows the river towards the Twin Bridges.

After crossing the bridge, you can go down the concrete stairs and spend some time by the river, a favourite area for the kids and the dog, and a great spot for skipping stones.

When you are done playing by the river head back and cross the bridge again, then right and follow the path that will take you back to the parking lot.

In total it takes us about one hour and ten minutes to hike the entire trail with the kids and the puppy. I say this is not the best first time trail for kids who are not used to hiking, but a great one if you have children who love hiking and you want a different trail to try.

I am sharing some photos from the twin bridges area below.

So fun for all.

  1. It’s so nice to see you out with your family like that! My daughter, now 16, doesn’t want to do that sort of thing with her mom anymore, she wants to go out with her friends. I’ve been replaced, lol. We raise them to be independent but sure hate it when they start pulling away.

  2. This looks like an awesome place to explore

  3. We love hiking too! We started when the kids were super little and just continued and now they eagerly look forward to it; I know they will continue the tradition and foster the love of nature into the next generation.
