We just returned from an unforgettable cruise to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder, and let me tell you: while we were blessed with gorgeous sunshine, mild temperatures, and even swimming on Glacier Day, I still managed to “overpack.”

I definitely brought way more than we ended up using! To save you from the same mistake, here are the must-haves and clever extras you’ll actually want in your suitcase.

Disney Wonder Alaska Cruise from Vancouver: Everything You Need to Know

1. Dress Like an Onion (Layers, Layers, Layers!)

Alaska’s weather can switch in a heartbeat, even on gorgeous summer days. While we were lucky to enjoy sunshine and warmth, with the kids splashing in the pool right in front of Dawes glacier, temperatures can still dip.

My number one tip: layer up. Think light tees or moisture-wicking base layers, fleeces or hoodies, and a light insulated jacket as needed. That is what we mostly wore. This way, you can peel off or bundle up on the fly

One of the best things about sailing with Disney is that you don’t need to stress about overpacking, because there are self-serve laundry rooms on board. Each machine is easy to use and can be paid for with your stateroom key card for a small fee.

We brought along a few travel-sized Tide packs to make laundry days simple, but you can also purchase detergent right there if you prefer. Having access to laundry during the cruise makes it so much easier to pack lighter.

Next cruise, we will definitely pack lighter, knowing we could wash and re-wear clothes instead of filling our suitcases with extras we didn’t really use.

2. A Reliable Rain- or Wind-Jacket

We relied on a windbreaker for rainy days in Ketchikan; thank goodness we had one. I also brought my umbrella and actually used it during that port day.  Even if you forget yours, Disney provides reusable ponchos by the gangway door during wet weather, which is a nice fallback. But ideally, pack a waterproof, breathable jacket with a hood. It doesn’t need to be bulky, but it will keep you comfortable when mist and drizzle come calling.

3. Magnetic Hooks to Maximize Cabin Space

With limited room in your stateroom, magnetic hooks are lifesavers. We brought a box of six from Amazon and used every single one to hang wet raincoats and outer layers. Happy to report we didn’t waste space or create clutter.

4. Binoculars

Wildlife spotting was a highlight of our Alaska trip: whales, eagles, sea otters, and even a chance glance at a bear on our way to a glacier. Having binoculars made all the difference, especially from our veranda. If you have a camera with a good zoom, bring that too; you’ll want to zoom in on those unforgettable sights and take lots of pictures.

5. Forget Tuxedos  and Gowns,  Smart Casual Works (Mostly)

I worried I’d packed too few “fancy” outfits, but on the Disney Wonder, formal nights were relaxed, think collared shirts for the kids and a nicer dress for me. Most people wore normal casual clothes even on those nights. If you’re planning to dine at specialty spots like Palo, check dress codes, but overall, you won’t need a ton of formal attire. This varies depending on the cruise line you are choosing, so check the rules for each cruise line before packing.

6. Swimsuits — Yes, Really!

Seriously, if you picture Alaska and think “cold, winter coats, and winter,” think again, especially for summer cruises. Pools, hot tubs, and even spontaneous swims happen. On our trip, the kids spent time in the pool daily. I even went for swims and relaxed in the hot tub a few times.  Pack at least one swimsuit, you’ll likely use it.

Additional Must-Haves That I Didn’t Overlook

  • Motion-sickness remedies (Sea-Bands, Motion Sickness Patches, Gravol, and Motion Sickness Glasses): We got all of our motion sickness helpers from Amazon. We didn’t need to use any because we had a very smooth sailing, but they are always a must to pack. Best to be prepared!

  • Sunscreen & lip balm: The sun reflects off glaciers and water intensely, but you’ll also need it for embarkation day in Vancouver, especially if you are going in the middle of the summer.

  • Comfortable walking/hiking shoes: Waterproof or with good traction for shore excursions. We were glad we packed our hiking shoes for the excursions.

  • Warm accessories: Wool socks, gloves, hat, scarf for glacier day morning. You will want to stand on the top deck as you are approaching the glacier, and it gets windy and cold then, so you’ll need them. Disney provides hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies on the top deck to help keep you extra warm that morning!

  • Cruise Door Decorative Magnets:  We got a few sets of Disney and Alaska-themed magnets to decorate our door. It was really cool seeing everyone’s cabin doors decorated, but the best thing was being able to spot and recognize our door quickly when going back to our room. They all look the same, and sometimes you get confused, so having those made it so easy for the kids and me to find our cabin.

Alaska Cruise Packing Guide: Everything You Need to Pack

  • Water-resistant daypack or dry bag: Perfect for excursions or carrying layers and snacks.

  • Reusable water bottle: Keeps you hydrated and avoids plastic waste. You can refill it in the pool deck area where all the self-serve drinks, water machines are located.

  • Essentials & entertainment: Pack chargers, documents, all medications, an e-reader or a book for sea days.
