When I was about thirteen or fourteen years old I got my first pair of Dr. Martens shoes. “Docs”, as we used to call them, were definitely the shoe of choice amongst many of my friends at that age. For us they represented a connection to particular kinds of music and subculture; something we were all beginning to explore as we moved into our teenage years and were developing our personal styles and tastes. One of my friends Mom’s was from the UK and she recalled wearing Docs as part of her school uniform when she was a child. She thought it was hilarious that what were once mandatory orthopedic shoes were now suddenly in fashion and so coveted. Nowadays there are many exotic colors and styles of Docs but for us the most common were the 3-hole, 10-hole and 14-hole classics in either black or cherry.
I always liked the fact that a pair of 3-holes made a comfortable every day shoe to wear with my jeans but they could still look sharp if I had to wear a suit or more formal clothes.
When I was a bit older I started to prefer wearing the 10-hole and 14-holes more. I always regretted taking a pair of brand new 14-holes to Lollapalooza where they got absolutely covered inside and out with grimy mud in the mosh pit. They were never the same after that.
My highschool days are long gone and now I am Dad with two young boys. For the first time in many years I got a new pair of Docs but my eldest son also got his first pair at the same time.
When I was younger I never imagined that one day my son and I would both be wearing Docs together so it is obviously kind of special to share this with him. I had forgotten how comfortable they are and I am really loving how they look and smell as well; definitely feels like the quality I remember My son is quite young but he was still excited for his first pair and hopefully he will enjoy them just as much as I do. Classics never go out of style.
