Nature books and animal encyclopedias are big favourites in our home. I love when the boys grab an encyclopedia and flip through the pages on their own.

Encyclopedias have super colourful images, lots of interesting information and they learn something new each time. Sometimes we also sit together and read through the pages and learn together.

Today, I am excited to share some new favourites from DK Books Canada this month.

new titles on the natural world,

  • First Nature Encyclopedia: This fun-packed nature encyclopedia introduces children to every aspect of the natural world. Your child will learn how animals and plants live in harmony. Explore trees, plants, bugs, and all sorts of exciting habitats! Includes close-up photography and full-colour illustrations. In this thrilling book, divided by habitat, children will discover polar regions, cool forests, deserts, mountains, caves, oceans, and more. Features detailed information boxes and curiosity quizzes sure to inspire children and encourage a healthy curiosity about the world around them. Great for young ages!
  • Explanatorium of Nature: A remarkable visual reference for kids that explores the natural world in stunning detail and allows young readers to see nature as they never have before, through amazing close-ups and cross-sections, exploded images, X-rays, and more.

From fish to forests, from mammals to mountains, from seeds to salamanders, this extraordinary new encyclopedia is the perfect tool for curious minds to find out how things work and why they exist, and will keep young readers absorbed with its amazing close-up images that depict and explain the wonders of plants, animals, and the living world around us. Its die-cut cover makes it even more appealing and awe-inspiring, with an iguana appearing to emerge from the book itself.

Created in association with the Smithsonian Institution, Explanatorium of Nature is a groundbreaking way to explore the science of the natural world around us and is sure to inspire inquisitive young readers. This book is stunning, the illustrations are out of this world!

  • Peek and Seek:  With 28 objects to count and find in each illustrated animal scene, this lively search-and-find puzzle book with gatefold flaps is positively packed with interactive fun!

Peek under the flap to reveal the flock of birds in the sky or troop of monkeys in the Amazon rain forest. Then seek all sorts of objects hidden in the animal crowd. Can you find two top hats and five paper planes?

Children will want to go back again and again to each of Charlotte Milner’s intricately illustrated animal gatherings, and they’ll discover something new every time! There are fabulous facts and things to learn along the way, such as animal collective nouns, and how monkeys keep each other clean. Children can lift the flap to reveal an army of ants busy at work or a school of fish passing through the colourful coral reef, and they’ll discover why some animals work best as a team. Our youngest loves this book! So fun!

  • Nature’s Deadliest Creatures Visual Encyclopedia:  Come face-to-face with 150 of the world’s scariest killer creatures, from the lion and great white shark to the tarantula, anaconda snake, golden eagle, vampire bat, and even the fierce ant!The book profiles every kind of animal–mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, insects, and arachnids. Chapters are arranged according to how these dangerous predators kill. Do they use jaws and claws, venom, stings, traps, tricks and cunning, or mass invasion?

With more than 200 spectacular photos in the book, every page has a stunning image of the animal in action, with data files giving a visual guide to its size, distribution, diet, and habitat, as well as a rating of its “scare factor.”  This is a favourite for our eldest. Lots of great fun facts and amazing images.
