A few weeks ago I received a cool package from Kenya, I don’t get packages from Africa often so I was super excited to open the envelope. The packaging was so unique, not sure what the material was but it looked like the envelop was handmade with some kind of fabric. Anyways, I was sent an adorable Organic Cotton Frog Sweater from Toto Knits. Isn’t it the cutest?
Toto Knits offers a collection of ethically made, organic cotton knits for babies and children. The organic cotton used in their collections is locally grown, spun and twisted, the also use bio friendly dyes only.
All Toto Knits garments are knit by a group of local single mothers in Kenya. Each piece is knit to order and even signed by the knitter. I really love how personalized and unique each piece is. It is great to receive a garment that has been personally signed by the knitter and that arrives directly from Kenya. I was checking out the Toto Knits Instagram account and I saw a photo of Nancy, our knitter, that was very cool since nowadays it is rare that you get to “meet” the person who made your clothes.
Toto Knits provides opportunities for Kenyan women to learn new skills and work in a family-friendly, flexible job environment. The knitters are paid per knitted item which allows them to work as much or as little as they like. Knitting is a skill that many Kenyan women learn as part of their traditional education and so they are provided with a comfortable and dignified workspace.
I just love the quality of the garment, their attention to details, including the cool packaging, their thank-you cards and the signed card with the name of the knitter, and of course the opportunities Toto Knits is giving to these women. I definitively recommend you check out their site here: www.totoknitsshop.com, they also have a great selection of adorable sweaters, hats, booties and blankets that would make great holiday gifts, birthday or baby-shower gifts!
