It’s February, and we’re in that weird in-between season—winter is still very much here, but spring is kind of on the horizon.
While I’d love to cozy under a blanket and pretend the never-ending cycle of home maintenance doesn’t exist, my kids have a way of reminding me (usually by smudging fingerprints all over the windows I just cleaned).
So, let’s get ahead of the seasonal transition with a helpful February Home Maintenance Checklist!
1. Indoor Maintenance: Tackle Those Neglected Spots
Winter means we’ve been hibernating indoors, and trust me, our homes show it.
This is a great time to deep clean those spots that have been collecting dust (and who-knows-what-else).
- Baseboards & Walls: A quick wipe-down will make your space feel instantly fresher. Bonus points if you hand your kids a Magic Eraser and turn it into a game.
- Ceiling Fans & Light Fixtures: Dust them before you start cranking up the fans for spring.
- Air Vents & Filters: Dust loves these spots, and if you’ve got a kid with allergies, keeping them clean is a game-changer.
- Kitchen Appliances: Give your oven, microwave, and fridge seals a wipe—because let’s be real, something probably spilled and got ignored.
2. Outdoor Prep: Assess the Winter Battle Damage
Winter storms can be rough on our homes, so let’s do a quick check before spring showers roll in.
- Gutters & Downspouts: Ice buildup and storm debris can clog them. Clear them out so water flows properly (or convince your partner to get up on the ladder).
- Roof Check: Grab a pair of binoculars and check for loose shingles or damage. If something looks off, schedule an inspection before spring rain makes things worse.
- Exterior Caulking & Seals: Check around windows and doors for gaps where heat is escaping (or where bugs might invite themselves in when it warms up). A little caulk now saves $$$ on energy bills later.
- Outdoor Faucets & Hoses: If you forgot to drain them before winter, now’s the time to check for leaks before spring gardening season.
3. Safety Checks: A Quick Once-Over for Peace of Mind
We don’t think about these things until something goes wrong—so let’s get ahead of it!
- Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Test the batteries! These things are lifesavers (literally), so don’t put it off.
- Fire Extinguishers: Double-check they’re still in good shape and easily accessible.
- First Aid Kit Restock: If your house is like mine, every band-aid has mysteriously disappeared. I am not sure why kids need one for every little papercut, ha! It’s time for a refresh!
- Emergency Plan: Quick family reminder—do the kids know what to do in case of an earthquake, fire or power outage? Maybe a 5-minute rundown over dinner!
4. HVAC & Air Quality: Breathe Easier
Your heating system has been working hard all winter—let’s give it a little TLC.
- Change Air Filters: The easiest thing to do for better air quality and energy efficiency.
- Schedule HVAC Maintenance: A quick check-up now means no surprises when it’s time to switch to A/C.
- Check for Drafts: Feel a chilly breeze? It’s time to seal up gaps around doors and windows with weather stripping.
- Declutter & Vacuum Vents: Dusty vents mean dustier air. Please give them a good vacuum, so your family breathes cleaner air.
I know—maintenance isn’t the most thrilling thing in the world (unless you get really excited about vacuuming baseboards like me; yes, I know, I am a clean freak). But tackling these tasks now means fewer problems and a smoother transition into spring.
So, grab your coffee, set a timer for 20 minutes a day, and knock out one or two things at a time. Before you know it, you’ll welcome spring in a home that’s fresh, safe, and ready for warmer days!

There are always tasks to do every season.
something i really have to do is now clean the areas i do not tackle often. I seem to keep to the same areas
It’s Spring cleaning time here for me. Thanks for the list, especially the safety tips. They shouldn’t be overlooked.
February seems a bit early for the outdoor jobs where I live, but I wish I had done all the others back in in February. I need to put them on my schedule for next year.
Can’t wait for spring cleaning.
You need to plan to renovate the house to make it suitable.
After going through the list and thinking about my own home prep, it reminded me how much a well-executed remodel can make maintenance easier and the house feel fresh year-round. If you’re in the Washington area and want to combine some of these upgrades with bigger changes (like better insulation, updated systems, or a full refresh), The Dadu Pro’s Washington project is a beautiful example of thoughtful, high-quality work that makes a home more comfortable and efficient.
