Sometimes no matter what you do catching a cold is inevitable. The cold season is in full force, and people all over the country are dealing with sickness. Are you or your little one at home with a cold right now? Below you’ll find four simple things that can help you stay comfortable and recover fast.

  • Get a humidifier

A stuffy or congested nose occurs when the tissues lining it become swollen. The swelling is due to inflamed blood vessels. Breathing in moist air can significantly help soothe the irritated tissue. Use a humidifier to help reduce congestion.  Tip:  Don’t have a humidifier? Go to your bathroom and close the door, turn the hot water on the shower and allow it to run while you sit close to the tub. Breathing in the steam from the shower will help thin out any mucus and also reduce inflammation.

  • Rest and Relax

Now is the time to take some time off if possible and relax. Turn on the T.V., grab a cup of hot tea and rest. Laundry and cleaning can wait! Try to squeeze a day nap or two if you can and nap with your little one if they are at the age of taking naps.

  • Use a nasal saline spray

Just a few drops of a saline solution in each nostril will help clear and moisturize nasal passages. You can find these at your local drugstore, or you can even make it yourself as well.  These saline solutions also help to thin the mucus, which in turn will help decrease the inflammation of their blood vessels.

  • Stay Hydrated

Drink water, tea, soup and natural juices. Hydration is critical when you are sick, staying hydrated helps thin the mucus, reduce pressure in your sinuses passages and push fluids out of your nose.

Finally, don’t forget to get the flu vaccine, prevention is key to avoid getting sick again! Remember that you can get your vaccination at your local Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacy, it is an easy and fast process and in most cases it is FREE.
