We’ve officially had our first days back to school here in British Columbia. This is going to be a very short week, but it is nice to get back to a proper routine and schedule with the kids.
Summer is wonderful, but let’s be honest, it’s also a little chaotic. At least in my home, it is. Between late bedtimes, endless snacks, sunscreen battles, and kids running in and out of the house, routines tend to fly right out the window. Once September rolls around and the kids are back in school, I always feel like I need my own reset just as much as they do.
Here are some of my favorite ways to get organized, feel refreshed, and bring a little order back into family life once the school year starts.
1. Refresh the Morning Routine
Summer mornings are slow and lazy for us, but school mornings? Not so much. I find it helps us to map out what needs to happen before we leave the house, and I usually get everything set up and ready the night before. So, school lunches and snacks are packed, breakfast is ready to be made in the morning, backpacks are packed, and clothes are picked the night before.
The kids have a list of things that have to happen before they leave the house, and they are responsible for those as well.
2. Deal with the Paper Pile
The first week of school always brings home a mountain of forms, newsletters, and e-mails from school. To avoid the paper taking over your counters, set up a “school station.”
I use one basket for forms that need attention, and I go through it every night, so the kids can dump their forms and papers that need my signature and review, and I can check it out at night and have it ready for them in the morning. I also spend some time every night checking my e-mails and going through the school’s lists and info.
Having a system from day one makes such a difference.
3. Meal Plan
The dinner-time scramble is real. Once after school classes, homework, and soccer practices and games kick in, there is no time to waste. I like to plan out 4–5 meals for the week and keep easy staples (tacos, sheet pan dinners, pasta) on hand. Bonus tip: Pack lunches right after dinner so mornings feel less rushed.
4. Create a School Drop Zone
You know, the mountain of backpacks, shoes, jackets, notebooks, papers, if they don’t have a home, they’ll end up in every counter. I ask the kids to keep their school items in our mud room and that way avoid a mess all over the house, we also have a shelf for lunch kits. It saves so much time when everyone knows where their stuff belongs.
5. Reset Yourself Too
Back-to-school season isn’t just about the kids, it’s about us moms, too. I like to use September as a chance to reset my own routines: getting back to workouts, meal prepping some healthier snacks for myself, and carving out a little quiet time once the kids are out the door. Even 10 minutes of coffee in peace can feel like gold before I get started with work.
Remember, no system is perfect. There will still be rushed mornings, forgotten lunches, and last-minute homework. That’s okay. The goal isn’t to be perfect, it’s just to make daily life a little smoother so everyone (including you!) feels less stressed. Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back to chaos. With a few small resets, you can set the tone for a calmer, more organized season, for your kids and yourself. And when all else fails, there’s always pizza night or a fun dinner out, am I right?
Happy Back to School xoxo
