There’s something so special about the simple traditions that become part of family life over the years. For us, Mother’s Day has turned into one of my favourite yearly traditions, a day that doesn’t need anything extravagant to feel perfect.
Every year on Mother’s Day, we head to the garden centre as a family. By this time of year, the weather is finally getting nicer, the sun is shining a little more, and everything feels fresh and full of life again. It always feels like the perfect way to welcome spring and celebrate the season.
We went together with the boys this morning and picked out some beautiful plants for the garden. This year, I chose a few herbs, cilantro and basil, which I’m excited to use all summer long. I also picked out some hummingbird-attracting plants for the backyard and for the hanging basket by the kitchen window. Every year, we get so many hummingbirds visiting there, and I absolutely love watching them while I’m in the kitchen. They make everything feel peaceful and alive.
Of course, I couldn’t resist bringing home one more plant, a large Bird of Paradise for the living room. It instantly made the space feel brighter and more tropical, and I already know it’s going to become one of my favourite plants in the house.
After our garden centre trip, we went for a dog hike together in the mountains, which was such a nice way to spend the rest of the morning outdoors. Even better, having the five of us together, as walks with everyone these days have to be planned (teens!). Then I spent the afternoon gardening, planting everything and getting my hands in the dirt, one of those little things that truly makes me happy.
Tonight, we’re heading out for dinner together to finish off the day.
Honestly, this is my perfect Mother’s Day. Nothing over the top, just quality time together, fresh air, gardening, family, and enjoying the simple pleasures in life. Those are always the moments that end up meaning the most.
I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day too, however you chose to celebrate it.
